Kilsyth and the Forth and Clyde Canal

During a workshop for people who live with Mental Health and Well-Being issues in the community in Kirkintilloch, this photo of the local canal bank prompted one of the participants to describe how walking there made him feel really calm – like being in another world.

This anecdote reminded someone else of the local Seagull Trust, which runs free cruises on the canal for people with long-term conditions. And in turn, another participant described a recent trip where the group went to Ghiloni’s traditional Italian restaurant for chips beforehand – very well organised, helpful, and endlessly friendly staff.

It was a treat for ALISS project staff to be able to sit in on these sessions, where people exchanged tips on what kept them well in the community – all sorts of simple, everyday, common-sense things.

The Institute for Research and Innovation in Social Services (IRISS) organised the project, and have written it up in detail.
