Rural & Urban Training Scheme (RUTS)

The RUTS Employability team deliver a range of vocational and pre-employment programmes, aimed at young people aged 15-24.

RUTS aims to equip young people with the confidence and skills required to achieve their highest potential and raise their aspirations. This is achieved through motorcycle and bicycle based programmes that are tailored to the individual needs of our clients.

Examples of our services:

Employability Fund - Stages 2 and 3

Part funded through Skills Development Scotland these courses are delivered over a 10-12 week structured timetable. They run initially as classroom-based training for the first 4-5 weeks at RUTS HQ, which focuses on key soft skills and employability training and leads onto a work placement for a further 4-6 weeks.

Trainees will work towards an SQA accredited qualification such as the Personal Development Award through a process of plan, do and review. This is centred around an individual training plan.

RUTS Sector Academies - Stages 1, 2 and 3

These courses are designed around specific sectors which include
• Construction
• Retail
• Hospitality & Tourism
• Office.

Through a 6-8 week programme, RUTS employability staff work with young people to deliver SQA accredited Employability Award qualifications. This is centred around training tailored to the specific industry directly within local high schools in Edinburgh and Midlothian.
