Caern Community Disability Service
Caern Community Disability Service provides short breaks for disabled children:
- Short breaks, providing sitter services, befriending and individual support.
- Emphasis on building confidence and independence through inclusive play, play/holiday schemes and enabling social inclusion and skills.
We provide an overnight Short Break Service for children and young people as well as providing Emergency Short Breaks.
The young people attending Caern have a wide range of needs. Our client group is learning disabilities but within this we have children with high care needs, Autistic Spectrum Disorders, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Epilepsy.
Each young person is allocated a link worker, who will compile an Individual Support Plan with input from the young person, the family, school and other agencies. These detail the routines and needs and abilities to allow for an individual service and consistent approach. These plans include regularly updated personal aims for the children so that any progress in social, communication or independence skills can be recorded.
Staff use communication aids with children who require this, including basic signalong, Picture Exchange Communication System and visual timetables.
Special diets are catered for by our staff and project cook, and we currently cater for children with gluten and dairy free diets.
Within the project we have a sensory room, as well as a play room and large circulation lounge, and a smaller TV lounge. There is a large garden area and woodland walkway directly next to the project house for the young people to use. The garden has specialist equipment designed for use by the children who attend the project, and we also have a wildlife garden at the front. The project has disabled access with a wet room and shower trolley. It also has another bathroom with a jacuzzi bath and sensory lights as well as a separate toilet. We also have hoists.
While the children are at Caern the staff arrange indoor activities such as arts and crafts, water play, baking and board games as well as DVDs. We also take them on outings in the community such as shopping centres, play parks, East Links animal farm, Gorgie farm and swimming.
