Dementia Friendly Aberdeenshire

by Aberdeenshire Voluntary Action Claimed

Dementia, Conditions, Health & Social Care Services

The Dementia Friendly Aberdeenshire project was set up in response to a growing local and national recognition of the social and economic benefits of harnessing the resources of communities to be dementia-friendly.

Dementia Friendly Aberdeenshire not only improve the experiences for people with dementia but also those of other groups of people within our communities with other long term conditions or health and social care needs. In turn, this enables them to continue to live their lives as they would wish to do so for as long as possible, reducing the level of intervention/support required from mainstream services.

Following a successful pilot, the project has secured funding from the Aberdeenshire Health and Social Care Partnership to June 2018 to enable the rollout of the model. As a result, the project team are working to consolidate activities in Inverurie, Huntly and Stonehaven with a view to establishing new activities in other localities.

The project’s key objectives are to enable people with dementia to experience fewer barriers to being connected with and supported by their communities; to thereby reduce social isolation and anxiety; and, in a wider sense, to enable people to live well with dementia for longer and reduce dependence on health and social care services.

At a local level, the project’s key aims are to:
1.Respond to what people with dementia and their carers say they want from a 'dementia friendly community' in particular being able to continue with activities in their communities.
2.Consolidate and support Inverurie, Huntly, and Stonehaven as dementia-friendly communities, enabling businesses and organisations to register with the awards scheme, and advertise themselves as dementia-friendly.
3.Establish and maintain a ‘Dementia-Friendly Aberdeenshire’ website which will promote communities, businesses and organisations who are recognised as dementia-friendly.
4.Enable other communities in Aberdeenshire to become ‘dementia-friendly’.
5.Support dementia-friendly communities to become sustainable.
6.Further develop partnership links at local and strategic levels to ensure the various contributions of partners are maximised and complementary.

The project is delivered via a project team managed by AVA, with support from a steering group comprised from key stakeholders and principal funders, including Aberdeenshire Council and NHS Grampian.
