What makes a good image caption?

There is an option to add images to your ALISS listing which you can add captions to. Images you add to ALISS will show at the bottom of the service page.

This is an example of an ALISS service page with an arrow pointing at the image gallery:

This is a webpage for the "Scottish Gambling Harm Lived Experience Forum" on the ALISS website. It shows a service description, contact info, a map of the UK, accessibility features, and an image.

Tips:

Do keep it short

Use around 3-6 words to caption the image. The caption is the title of the image, it will show under the image on the service page.

Do not use block capitals

Do not write in block capitals. They create barriers to accessibility for many individuals, including those with disabilities or learning difficulties. Using mixed cases can help ensure that information is accessible to everyone.

Do not add website links

Do not add website URLs to the caption field. Users will not be able to click any link added from the field. Website links can be added to the “Service Web Address” field. Some people might use screen readers to search ALISS, if the link is not clickable, the screen reader might not recognise it as a link.

Do not add an address

Do not add an address to the caption field. You can add this in Step 3 of this form.

Do not add leaflets

Do not upload leaflets as images unless all the text on the leaflet is also included in the alt text. This ensures the content is accessible to screen reader users. To keep your content accessible, provide the text in the description field of your listing instead.

Do not use jargon

Use plain language that everyone can understand.

Do add the correct image format

Your images must be in one of these formats: JPG, JPEG, or PNG. These are common types of image files.

Do add the correct file size

You can add files no larger than 2.5MB, with minimum dimensions of 80 pixels by 80 pixels.

Why is a good caption for a gallery image important?

Understanding

Captions provide context that may not be immediately evident in the image. They help viewers understand the significance or details of the image.

Engagement

A good caption can capture the viewer's attention and encourage them to look at the image more. It can evoke emotions and spark curiosity in your service.
