My Sighted Guide

by Guide Dogs Scotland Claimed

Our sighted guiding service connects people with a trained, local volunteer to get out and do more of the things they love. As well as promoting mobility, our volunteer sighted guiding service can build your confidence and improve your social interactions.
My Sighted Guide has been shown to help with:
• Gaining confidence
• Increasing your independence
• Making new friends
• Enjoying activities in your community
We can also provide sighted guiding training for family and friends. This can help them to feel more confident in guiding you safely, and you can learn and adapt the best way to be guided.
As part of full sighted guiding training, our trainers will cover things like:
• Giving clear instructions to describe obstacles, hazards or changes in ground surface – without overloading the person you’re guiding with information
• Using directions such as ‘left’ or ‘straight ahead’, not ‘over there’
• Leaving enough room around obstacles – not forgetting those at head height as well as ground level
• Never pushing or pulling the person you’re guiding
