Last updated: 05/08/2025

What is a Community Care Grant

It can cover costs if you:

  • need help setting up a new home when you've been homeless, leaving care or prison
  • need support to stay out of care and keep your home to a liveable standard
  • care for someone who's been released from prison
  • escaped domestic abuse and need help
  • have a child whose health is at risk due to not having a settled home or essential items

Who can apply

You need to be on a low income. This does not mean you need to be on benefits. There's no figure that confirms whether you've a low income. If you're on one of the benefits below or your income is about the same as someone who is, it's more likely you can get a Community Care Grant:

  • Income Support
  • Pension Credit
  • Jobseeker's Allowance (JSA) - Income based
  • Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) - Income based
  • Universal Credit
