Neighbourhood Networks - Midlothian

by Neighbourhood Networks In Scotland Claimed

Neighbourhood Networks is an innovative voluntary organisation that develops peer support networks for vulnerable adults across Scotland. Neighbourhood Networks has developed networks across a range of communities in Midlothian including Penicuik and Dalkeith.

Aims and objectives of the organisation are to work with local communities to support and empower even more people who may be described as having a learning disability, mental health difficulties and other vulnerable people that could benefit from this flexible model of support. Networks have also been developed to engage specifically with young people in transition in this area.

A Living Support Network, or peer support network consists of nine to 12 network members and a Community Living Worker. Community Living Workers are recruited from the area of the networks to support nine to 12 individuals who live in their own homes within walking distance or reasonable travelling distance of each other. The Community Living Workers are supported by a Network Manager who also knows and works with the network members. The Community Living Workers are local people who are well connected in their community having local knowledge to develop support for network members. Support is provided individually or in groups. The networks provide four main levels of support: -

1. Flexible Housing Support – support of practical nature to enable people to manage tenancies. Neighbourhood Networks is registered as a housing support service with the Care Inspectorate

2. Mutual Support – building on the strengths, gifts and skills of members to support one another.

3. Community Connections – working with members to link and create opportunities within communities for truly active citizenship that build not only the capacity of the individual and network but also of the community itself.

4. A quick response – the proximity and flexibility of the CLW means the organisation is well placed to intervene in a time of crisis preventing such situations from unnecessary and damaging escalations.
