Funeral Support Payment

Last updated: 14/11/2025

Social Security Scotland is an executive agency of the Scottish Government. We help the people of Scotland by delivering a range of social security payments.

One of the benefits we deliver is the Funeral Support Payment which helps pay for funeral costs. You can use the payment towards funeral costs for a baby, child or adult. This includes babies who were stillborn.

You can get a Funeral Support Payment if:

  • you live in Scotland
  • you or your partner are getting certain benefits
  • the person who died lived in the UK
  • the funeral is being held in the UK or in some circumstances , another country
  • you're applying after the person has died, until 6 months after the date of their funeral
  • you or your partner are responsible for the funeral costs
  • it's reasonable for you or your partner to accept responsibility for the funeral costs

To find out more, or apply for any of our benefits, you can phone one of our advisors. For other contact options and support, please see our website.
